Sunken Prison by jbcasacop Sunken Prison by jbcasacop
This is my rendition of a partially-flooded subterranean prison which is one of the levels in our game called War of the Burning Sky - Online. As you may have noticed, the style I used for this painting is not the one usually seen in my works. That's the thing with game dev. Sometimes you have to keep your work consistent with others exhibiting a different style. I still kind of like how this one turned out. :)

Technicals:

Gorgeous, yet potentially disturbing to someone like me with an underwater phobia. I won't let that get in the way of the beauty though.

Thank you! I'm glad it appeals to you despite how disturbing the location is. :)

No problem. Art is meant to disturb.

This is so beautiful. I hope to digital paint like that someday! I'm a beginner in digital painting but how do you get that realistic? I don't know where to start...Could you give me some tips? I am in the Game Art program at school and I really want to be an environment artist for games but I don't know where to begin.

Hi there! Sorry for the late response. Been busy lately. With regards to painting backgrounds like these, it really helps to study fundamentals. The areas you'd want to focus on include perspective, atmospheric perspective and most importantly, composition. It could take a while to learn these things. I've been doing this for a while and I still have a lot to learn. But the rewards are great! Also, try looking at the work of Feng Zhu. He has a lot of good advices. [link] :)

I have seen Feng Zhu it is SOOOO amazing. Just beautiful the creations from digital painting. Did you take a class for digital painting or just get a tablet and learn on your own. Right now i'm learning on my own but I think it might help for me to draw interior/exterior spaces from life. Then start creating from my imagination.

I didn't take any digital painting class but I did take traditional painting classes. The very first painting I did was a small rendition of a landscape copied from a picture from a certain magazine. It took around a year of drawing from life before I felt comfortable enough to draw from my imagination. I read books by Alwyn Crawshaw and Helen Van Wyk. And as corny as it may seem to others, I also spent time watching "The Joy of Painting" series by Bob Ross! Hahaha! There's more to his work than just "happy little trees". I was already taking fine arts courses when I got my first tablet. Familiarizing with digital tools didn't take long but I don't think I could have learned fast enough if not for the comic book coloring tutorials that I read. :)

You know every work of yours could be a Daily Deviation but other artists won't get a chance to be featured so they don't feature all your work :P
But for me almost all of your work is better than a DD! Love your style!

I'm glad about how it turned out too. I wasn't sure I could pull something like this off when I started it because I decided to use techniques I am not accustomed to. But I think it came along pretty well. I'm glad you like it! Thank you! :)

I love the creepy atmosphere this has, it's easy to feel how damp and cold it is. The contrast is great too, especially between the bright red windows and the blue-green surroundings. And of course the structures themselves are awesome, they fit so well into the surrounding rocks. Nicely done.:D

Love the reflection of the water, and the whole subterranean feel is gorgeous. Does look quite sparse so far as prisons go, a perfect place for adventuring and the like. Truthfully, it came out beautifully, so great work with that :D
