Speed paintings - 09.21.2011 by jbcasacop Speed paintings - 09.21.2011 by jbcasacop
This is a series of speed paintings I did during down time. The scenes depicted here are all based on photographs I gathered from Google Images.

Why I did these paintings:

My objective here was not to copy exactly what I saw in the references but rather to "re-calibrate my color perception". It's not that there was something terribly wrong with it. I just wanted to be able to paint these by images mixing and utilizing the colors that I was seeing from the reference photos. In other words, colors based on my judgement. Throughout the entire process, I imposed three rules upon myself.

1. No using of the eyedropper tool to pick hues from the source images. The objective is to force the eyes to see and to paint and draw accordingly.

2. No zooming in on the source images. No zooming in on the actual paintings until the detailing phase which is about 1/4th of the painting process. The objective is to put the Gestalt theory into practice. In other words, to see the forest for the trees through avoidance of fixation towards excessive detailing.

3. Only a maximum of 2 hours per painting is allowed.

For the first time, I painted using not only the brush tool but also the lasso tool and the line tool. I have to admit that I've never done blocking as extensively as I did here. Nor have I spent a lot of time with color mapping in my previous paintings. When I started doing this series, I felt I was a little beyond my comfort zone. But I'm pretty happy with the results. I didn't expect to complete 4 paintings in a row.

I began taking digital painting seriously around 5 years ago. My style and techniques still need a lot of refinement but I am truly glad that at this point, my portfolio manages to get me positive feedback. Thank you very much! I'm happy that you appreciate my work. :)

Knowing the way I work, that was quite a brave thing to do. I think the results justify it though. I particularly like the woods.

Nice idea with lasso especially to make good looking leaves. :P Also I like the colours. I must read about that Gestalt theory soon. Also, that's Photoshop or Painter? I have a dilemma between those, because Painter gives me amazingly smooth lines, but Photoshop is much more comfortable... Maybe You have some experience about that?

Thanks! I'm glad you like this bunch! These were all made using Photoshop. I have tried using Painter before. I think it's a nice program to use but I'd still prefer Photoshop. I think it's a lot more intuitive and it's certainly not as taxing to the GPU and CPU as Painter is. :)

They are really cool. I like the loose, sketchy style, it is really hard for me to loosen up and forget about too much detail and I really do have to start. These pics look very convincing as 'traditional media' rather than digital. Great stuff

Thanks man! I'm glad you like them! I also have a tendency to spend too much time in detailing. This kind of exercise serves as a very relaxing countermeasure to that! :)

I'm going to give it a try as soon as I have finished my latest project. I mainly work in painter ( trying to learn painter ), I am planning on putting something up on DA as soon as I can convince myself I have done something good enough. Thanks for the 'watch' too, I really appreciate it :D

I love the theory! I've been getting into scenery a lot more lately and that seems like a great way to train the eye! I especially like the clouds, and the tidal splash :D

It truly is a great way to hone one's visual perception skills. Many (including myself) often forget that drawing is also a skill of the eye. This is a very relaxing if not a therapeutic means of keeping on track. I'm glad you like what I've put together here. Thanks! :)
