Order of the Emerald by jbcasacop Order of the Emerald by jbcasacop
This is a splash page featuring several characters from the graphic novel :iconjoshpierce: and I are working on. We don't have an official name for this team but as you can see, majority of them are from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and they're all in armor so that's where I got the idea for what I'll be calling this team and the painting as well.

Many thanks to Josh for giving me permission to show this around. I'm planning to send this to ImagineFX. I hope someday they pick my works for FXpose! Hahaha! :)

Technicals:

Adobe Photoshop CS5
Many many hours spread across several days

Very nice. I especially like the fact that you opted for functional armor on a female character, instead of the ever popular chain mail bikini. Overall it's a very captivating piece. Well done!

Thank you! I didn't want her to look too Red Sonja-like so I chose something that leans closer to a functional design. I'm glad you like it! :)

He's my version of the Mad Hatter. I know he's from another story but that's one of the twists in our graphic novel. :)

I'm glad you like it! Thanks! To make it look rough, I refrain from using blending tools especially the smudge tool. I blend by picking adjacent colors then painting over. I also depend heavily on pen pressure. The brushes I used were freebies I got from an issue of ImagineFX magazine. Now the cool thing is- they're also available online! Get the brushes from here:

Don't forget to check out the works of the guy who made them. His name is Jan Ditlev Christensen- awesome artist! :)

OMG This is AWESOME! I could tell you about the stunning use of mixed mythoi and the attractive and pedagogical dissonance of such archetypal characters and themes, but I think I'll just say "WOW."

The fun apart about this is, we aren't just using the Wizard of Oz we are creating our own little world with different stories in the same vein as the Wizard of Oz. Expect to see some other familiar faces in the future.

Sorry for the delayed response! :D

I wouldn't mind giving tips so don't hesitate to ask! :) I use Adobe Photoshop. The version doesn't really matter but for what it's worth, I'd tell you that I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS5. :)

Sketchbook Pro is a good program to use.

1. You definitely need a good input device- a graphics pen and tablet. The brand or model doesn't really matter as long as your device is pressure sensitive and doesn't break easily. Genius tablets aren't bad except their pens require batteries to operate. I've heard of Hanvon which seems to be okay. I'm using a Wacom Intuos 3.

2. As for shading, I do it in pretty much the same way as I would using a real pencil- by controlling the weight of my strokes. I am heavily reliant on pen pressure.

3. Photoshop CS5 is the latest version of Photoshop. The safest way to get an installer that's not pirated is by getting a copy of ImagineFX. They almost always include a 30-day trial version of it in the DVDs that come free with the mag. You can eventually buy a legitimate serial for it which I think is cheaper than if you'd buy a boxed copy.

4. See item #2. You really have to be able to shade with a real pencil.

I hope this helps! :)

Okay, I use Sketchbook Pro! But you could help me with some things!
1. What equipment do you need?
2. How do you do basic shading?
3. What does the icon of your program look like so I can find it? When I search it I only find tutorials.
4. How do you do shading?

Well thats pretty much it!

Oh shoot! I'm sorry! I suddenly remembered you were asking for tips on iPad painting! It slipped my mind! The tips I've been giving you are for painting on the PC! My apologies!

Okay here we go:

I use Sketchbook pro sometimes. But I'm a lot more comfortable with Brushes.

1. I don't really have any special equipment for iPad painting. I have a generic stylus but sometimes I don't use it at all.

2. There's no true pressure sensitivity for the iPad so to simulate shading, I play around with opacity. This can be pretty tough at first and it demands some patience but everything will be smooth sailing once you get the hang of it.

3. The icon of the App I'm using looks like a palette board with an orange background. I have to admit that it lacks many of the features found in Sketchbook Pro but it's capable of recording the entire painting process which I think is pretty neat!

4. Play around with opacity. Then use the color picker tool to pick up the colors between different values. Use the colors you pick to just paint over and over to simulate blending of colors.

I really hope this helps! :)
