"Dying is not difficult, yielding is impossible" ~Jane Grey Swisshelm

Technicals:

Adobe Photoshop CS4
Maybe about 6 hours of work. This is a rough estimate. I can't accurately tell how much time I spent on this one because I took a lot of breaks. I'm really liking this loose method of painting that I'm studying right now. This artwork is a nod to a couple of artists whose works have greatly inspired me. A toast to the greatness of Craig Mullins and Jan Ditlev Christensen!

Cute? He doesn't look cute to me. Not at all. Not even harmless. But that's your opinion and I really don't mind if you see it that way! :D Thanks for viewing and commenting! :)

The varying degree of detail amongst the elements of this work adds a sense of space and depth, as well as the effect that fog covers the area. The wings are a nice way to fill the eventual open space created by the sky background, had the wings not been drawn on there. The wings also give the sense of dread and size, making the dragon more threatening, and (as if) blocking the path of the knight towards safety and (perhaps?) safety :D

The orientation of the piece allows those who behold the artwork to take the position of a helpless bystander, watching the tormenting saga between man and beast, good and evil :headbang:

I need to ask, how do you achieve that painterly effect

:iconjbcasacop:

First, you need to have the right tools for it. For this painting, I used a variety of custom brushes that can be downloaded from here:

[link] <-- these are Adobe Photoshop custom brushes.

But having these tools is just the start of it. To achieve something that looks like this, you need to execute your painting in a very loose way. That means you detail only the focal points of the painting. The brushes found on the link above are all hard-edged. They are suitable for paintings that aren't too smooth. That's another thing to consider. When blending colors, try not to be too concerned with smoothing it out. That means no using of the smudge tool. I believe that if you can follow these guidelines, you can achieve a painterly look as well. I hope this helps! :)
